Field Liaison

About University at Albany:

Established in 1844 and designated a University Center of the State University of New York in 1962, the University at Albany's broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research and public service engages a diverse student body of approximately 17,000 students in nine schools and colleges across three campuses.

Located in Albany, New York, New York State's capital, the University is convenient to Boston, New York City and the Adirondacks.

Job Description:

The Field Liaison is a part-time, temporary position. The Field Liaison actively supports both MSW students and community partners as students complete required field practicums, which can be completed at one agency, via several agencies/projects, or via approved human services employment. A small cohort of MSW students in the online MSW program will require unique support as they complete field practicums in their local communities. The Field Liaison is a social work professional who will provide a variety of supportive services designed to create cohesive working relationships between MSW students and their Field Instructors, assist students with making connections between field and academic learning, monitor students' adherence to social work educational standards, and assist the School of Social Welfare with field site development. These services include but are not limited to problem-solving, mediation, coaching on professional development, intervention meetings, creation of written intervention plans, connecting to university resources, seminar facilitation, field instruction, and individual or group supervision meetings.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends required initial Field Liaison training(s) and scheduled meetings each semester and completes university-mandated trainings.
  • Provides the first intervention(s) if a problem arises at the field placement, with the goals of resolving conflict, maintaining the student's placement, and monitoring to prevent recurrence.
  • Conducts site visits and other outreach activities with the Field Instructor and student to evaluate the student's performance in the field.
  • Assesses student assignments, learning objectives, and skill development by reviewing the Learning Agreement, field evaluations, process recordings, macro projects, and/or Simulation sessions.
  • Interprets SSW policies, procedures, and agency expectations to the Field Instructor; continually monitors the fit of agency placement and student abilities per the MSW program curriculum.
  • Prepares and facilitates a monthly Integrated Field Seminar via Zoom for first-year MSW students. Uses Seminar to assist students with integrating field and course work, process field issues, and assist students with overall professional development. Evaluates Seminar coursework.
  • Arrange office hours to accommodate individual student meetings as needed or requested.
  • Communicate with the Director and Assistant Directors of Field Education if a problematic placement cannot be resolved through early interventions.
  • Makes recommendations for continued use of agencies and Field Instructors. Assists with identifying new field placement sites and facilitates partnerships with the School of Social Welfare.
  • Provides input on a final grade for students to the Director of Field Education based upon seminar assignments, performance in the field placement, field evaluations, discussions with students and Field Instructor, and the overall manner in which a student has met responsibilities.
  • Provides Field Instruction and/or practicum activity oversight to a small cohort of students, as needed.
  • Maintains written records of Field Liaison duties as required.
